Ahsoka premiered at 3 am in Europe and K. and I will probably be watching it later today, unless K. manages to get up early and watch it this morning, in which case I might join her and watch over her shoulder.

I'm not really a Star Wars fan, but since K. introduced me to Clone Wars, I've been a bit more invested and I really love Ahsoka as a character, so I'm excited and a bit nervous to see what this new series brings.

So many expectations can be ruined very, very fast, after all.

EDIT: My silly GF actually stayed awake till 3 am and watched it. She has mixed feelings. We'll be watching it together later today.

I don't have any plans today, which is really nice. I think I might just sit down and watch Napoli again, maybe read more in My Brilliant Friend which I started last week. It gives such a sense of Naples in that era. I really love it.

Also, I know it's universally criticized, but Hübbe's vision with his new interpretation of Napoli is sooooo good. The aesthetic is so bright and summerly and the story is well told. Bournonville is only to blame for a percentage of that, because this Napoli is wholly Hübbe's project, even the steps are changed in places. And honestly, the places that he's changed the most - like the second act - are the absolute best parts, which says a lot.

And as always, Alexandra Lo Sardo has my heart, no matter what she does. Her Teresina is so genuine and heartfelt.

Ever since writing a Danish piece on it, I've always wanted fanfic for Teresina and Giovanina. I just have this feeling they were really good friends before Gennaro, then had a fall-out and they could become close again, if Giovanina either got over herself or Gennaro was taken out of the equation... Maybe both, both is good.

An idea for some rainy day.

I slept until noon, because I sat up last night, and have just made tea and taken my pills. I've spent until now writing notes for a new take on that [community profile] smallfandombang Marie Antoinette fic, because I kept struggling with the original one, x-over with Manon Lescaut and I couldn't quite figure out what exactly made it hard for me to connect with it. Well, I've been reading Fools Rush In by shulamithbond (Marie Antoinette/Madame du Barry, explicit) because I'm a huge femslash fan and like to see femslash in absolutely everything, and I realised along the way that the general idea I had of Antoinette getting a mistress was no doubt inspired by her relationship to du Barry in the movie and I should just -- well, go with that, rather than force Manon into the equation.

So, I tried imagining some scenes and it all came pouring out, so that I am currently sitting with the framework for an estimated 20.000 word story. Mostly plotted out and prepped, except for the cupious amounts of historical shit I have to look up. Like, 18th century clothes? How does that work? It's my luck the film kinda also makes its own universe, because then I can mainly stick to that. Vocabulary, however, is still very much a thing. Help.

If nothing else, I should probably get started on the Marie Antoinette biography I borrowed yesterday.

Also, also, it's too warm, send sprinklers.

It's been a weird day, quiet, kinda down. It's also been too warm out, so that hasn't helped on my mood. I went to the library to turn in my books and pick up another (on Marie Antoinette), but didn't stay long because they were housing a conference for archaeologists and there were just too many fucking people, omg. Picked up my Claudine book on the way home, too, from the bookshop. Then, I went full zombie mode until K. came home and it was time for dinner.

I've been obsessed with Swan Lake today. Not with Odette or Odile as per usual, but with the four princess dances, the Neapolitan (called the Italian in the 2015 Danish version), the Hungarian, the Spanish and the Russian. In the current RDB production, these four dances were tailor-choreographed by two resident members of the company, Gregory Dean (Hungarian and Spanish) and Oliver Starpov (Russian and Italian). I personally think they are the best parts of the whole ballet and I always look forward to seeing them. The casting of them is always such a surprise, because they're generally used to feature younger, fresher talent.

The Hungarian is uploaded to YouTube! The others aren't available outside the full ballet as found on the Royal Danish Theatre's streaming site (which is only accessible within Denmark), but I've managed to dig up some photos from the productions original Tumblr site, back when they premiered this in 2015.

Here it's Gudrun Bojesen, former RDB superstar, dancing the Hungarian princess with her entourage of four, where one of them is Astrid Elbo, a very solid gold soloist now, but a corps dancer back then.

Photos under cut )

I think I might have a fanfic idea for these four princesses now, but I won't say too much, because I still have the Marie Antoinette idea rummaging around my head, too, so I have to just give myself some peace and quiet to pick what I want to work on. Luckily there are still a week's time until sign-ups for [community profile] smallfandombang, so I have time to try both ideas out and see which one is easiest to work with. Easiest to write. They both have their pros and cons.

But Swan Lake is my fandom, it's home, so I might be a bit biased here.

Plus, it gives me a good excuse to rewatch the second act ballroom scene so many times I end up feeling physically sick from it, probably.

Win.

I'm getting more and more excited about the Marie Antoinette/Manon Lescaut idea.

Have made a RP journal for Marie Antoinette ([personal profile] encorevivante) to get some practice with her voice beforehand and am rereading the beginning of Prévost's Manon Lescaut currently, but will be rewatching act 1 of the ballet later today, since I think I'll be crossing MA over with the MacMillan version, not the novel. The way the plot is rendered in the ballet fits what I need for the x-over better than the novel does (like, more of Manon's brother's idiocy), though honestly, both could have worked. I just really love Alexandra Lo Sardo's portrayal of Manon and will probably stick to the RDB production, thank Heavens it's still on YouTube.

Or, if all else fails, I'll try getting my hands on the Royal Ballet version with Sarah Lamb, have only seen gifs from that one but it looks absolutely stunning!

I've found the most perfect Marie Antoinette playlist. It is literally an hour of nothing but songs that vibe just right with me. Will be writing to this happily.

Am slowly making notes for the story structure and reading up on a lot of historical shit, not because I'm writing about a real historical person, but because even when I intend to stay strictly within the constraints of the movie's portrayal of the period, there are things that only make sense in context and I have questions, pretty much. So many questions. However, I love the naturalness that Kirsten Dunst imbues Marie Antoinette with, she is truly just a teenager fucking around in a sick system not made for her. I love that and it's probably going to kind of be my baseline for my own interpretation of the character in this fic.

So, yes. Excited!

The 10,000-word big bang for small fandoms is coming soon!
Author Sign-Ups Open Sept 1 | Artist Sign-Ups Open Nov 1

Am I gonna do this? Yes. Yes, I think I may be doing this. Could go either for the Marie Antoinette/Manon Lescaut fic (both fandoms counting as small) or the Irene Holm one which no one else has written anything for before, so... Well, actually all my fandoms are small, so I shouldn't have any trouble picking and choosing, no matter what I might be thinking of writing for. Ballet fandoms here I come??

Please consider jumping this challenge if you have any small (max. 2000 fics, I think is the requirement) fandoms that need some quality writing boosts and love! I love reading about obscure fandoms, it makes me endlessly happy.

Well, it means I should probably wait starting with the writing until I've signed up, so I don't cheat with any WIPs... Ah! Just looked over the rules and actually, I'm allowed to start writing, I just can't have posted the fic anywhere beforehand and will have to write 10.000 additional words to what I've already written by October 1st. Hmm...

This is exciting! I hope I can participate! It would be a first for me.

Getting art to go with your fic would be pretty cool, too...

Since I'm noticing a trend with my writings atm (fanfic, obscure canons), I went ahead and made a community where I can dump all the obscurities in collection, it's even named after it! [community profile] obscurenesses. I've already made an overview entry of the fics I've posted to AO3. Still undecided whether I'll keep posting stuff there, but with some things I might.

Decided I needed a "smaller" project besides the Irene Holm X-mas calendar, so might try and write that Marie Antoinette/Manon Lescaut fic after all, since no one's out there to pick my brain and do it for me. Found an old prompt from one of my [community profile] genprompt_bingo cards, "colors of the flag", so am thinking of making it a three-parter with a section inspired by each color in the French tricolore. Still need to be clear on the timeline, rewatch the film and read the beginning of the Prévost novel, but most importantly, I really need to revisit the ballet.

The Royal Danish Ballet's aesthetically ugly as fuck but very well-danced version is up on YouTube, still. Might go give the first act a rewatch. Part 1 & part 2. Just because I love Alexandra Lo Sardo's Manon a lot.

Also, this playlist is going to run on repeat until this fic is out of my system, I swear.
