MAY 1ST
LUNAR DAY 1The marsh is different terrain, it is troublesome and treacherous, she doesn’t trust in it as far as she can spit.
As she pulls the horse with her, reins loose and dangling like lifelines between them, the Amazon remembers the many battles that came before this one and she thinks, she is carrying them all inside, her guts make the field on which they play out now.
Her body thinks so, too.
Her mind thinks so, three.
The Amazon wonders, then, if it is retribution, how it’s her blood which spills this time, if it might not be better because her lunar cycle kills no one, she is losing nothing that wasn’t meant to be lost.
That is not the way any external battles work.
MAY 2nd
LUNAR DAY 2Her first regret is not her lack of defences, now that she has buried both her weapons; her first regret is how she has buried her last link to her love with them.
The bracelet hanging around her neck weighs indefinitely less than silver and jewels, it is so easily forgotten. When she touches it, these days, it is mostly by accident.
A surprising reminder; psst, I was made for you once.
The sword, by contrast, was a sturdy bridge, it spanned the mountains, it spanned the marsh, the meadows that came before. The Amazon feels the fear rear its head now, like moles out of their holes in the ground, that she will never get home – and if she does, it will only be to discover that her love never needed the one thing they still share.
That her love never swung her sword in the Amazon’s old name.
I was planning on getting started on May today and had probably hoped to get a bit further than the 2nd, but life happens, stuff needed doing, tiredness kicked my butt and when not tiredness, then restlessness did a number on my mind, so. This is what I managed tonight, two poems to start May off with, at least.
Whereas I'm still meh on the last half of April, I think May is coming off to a good start and I am excited to get to plan and outline the rest of the month. The Amazon will be travelling through treacherous terrain and without her weapons! Hopefully this will give way to all the reflection that is what I truly love about writing.
