I've been a fan of Postmodern Jukebox for a couple of years and really enjoyed a lot of the covers they put out. They elevate popular music to a whole other level, really. This spring they were touring for the first time since Covid and my girlfriend took me to their concert in Vejle near where we live. I only stayed for the first part of the concert, leaving during intermission - not because it wasn't good, it was amazing, that cover of Radioactive that wrapped up the first half of the show was absolutely killer, but I was very sick at the time and couldn't stand the crowd.

They're coming back to Denmark, to Copenhagen this time, in May and I'm considering maybe catching that show instead, now that I am no longer expected to do internships or work. We'll see.

Until then, I have the very broad selection of videos that the ensemble puts out every month.

I could spam you with so many of my favourite covers, but I'm gonna stick to the playlist I'm listening to right now which is their 60's inspired jazz. I've picked four videos that I really love at the moment and will do a round of introductions.

Happier by Olivia Rodrigo. I don't actually know the original, but this version is absolutely amazing. The girl group style is so charming and theatrical. From the lovely choreography to the expressions on Allison Young's face that just makes this a feminist anthem, really. Someone mentioned in the comments that if these kind of songs had actually been sung in the 60s, the industry had looked completely different today and I so symphathise with that thought experiment.

Also, I just love the dresses on all three singers. So happy and yellow.

The Taylor Swift banger. Like you've never heard it before. This is perhaps my actual favourite PMJ cover of them all. I think, when I discovered it, I literally listened to it for eight hours straight. It's soooooo good. Again, the girl group style, but also Motown and Tia Simone just has the most delicious voice on a person ever. Everyone is so into this arrangement, from the chorus girls to the tambourine guy.

Just. Watch it. I beg you.

Sex on Fire, an older number by Kings Of Leon, here sung by Adanna Duru who has an incredible voice and stage presence. Also, I never realised how sexual these lyrics are before, so thanks to PMJ for making me blush on the bus, I guess. It's more standard jazzy than the other two - and slower, too, but I really love it.

The final example of what PMJ does best is this Bruno Mars cover. Sung by Brielle Van Hugel. She has an amazing raw voice, yet with so much control and strength. And the chorus is absolutely incredible, there are places in this song that give me chills. The entire arrangement is so nice.

Conclusion: if you don't like Postmodern Jukebox, do you even go here??

Edit: Also, this is my 100th entry, so I guess we're also listening to PMJ to celebrate that.
