As much as I love ballet, I especially love modern/contempary ballet and think modern dance strikes me in the gut much more often than most classical or neo-classical ballet does.

For example, my favourite ever choreography (besides The Moor's Pavane which I have talked about in here before and will return to at a later point) is Six Dances by Jiri Kylian. The music is Mozart, the style is absurb, but also so instantly recognisable, it feels like it was taken out of my own head.

More recently, I became familiar with Carolyn Carlson's Signes which was originally made for the Paris Opera Ballet and the whole thing filmed for DVD release, though it's old and difficult to obtain these days. Luckily, some kind soul has uploaded the whole thing here. When looking it up, I realised that they're putting it on again this season, it'll be playing in Paris come June - if I had the spoons for that kind of travel, I would definitely go see it! The clips I've found are remarkable.

Choregraphic punch to the gut.

See for yourselves.

The opening scene (with her own company dancing here, I believe):

And from the old Paris Opera Ballet cast, a solo with Marie Agnès Gillot who is sublime, in this and everything else I've see her in:

That was my ballet input for the day. Now I will go write more on my fic where we have now entered April. Time just goes faster when you write, huh?
