DIE KAMELIENDAME / THE LADY OF THE CAMELLIAS – Hamburg Ballet, 1986.

In most other cases, I would gladly admit to having a maybe nostalgic preference for the Paris Opera Ballet version from 2008, but in the case of Manon, I don’t think I’ve seen anyone be as poignantly cruel and devastatingly tragic as the dancer dancing her in the old recording. The make-up was different, too, which I think helped to show the transformation. And Manon’s purple costume is one of my favourite ones among the Lady of the Camellias ladies. I think only Olympia’s pink cuteness beats it. There’s this beautiful photo of Veronika Part from ABT in it that really showcases the details. Here. I’ve always loved Manon’s part of the ballet, she makes this particular re-interpretation of the story unique and much more psychologically interesting than either the opera or the original novel is on their own. I always shipped Manon and Marguerite a lot, but it was that one Russian-language fanfic on AO3 that I obviously can’t read that pushed me towards my doom aka this NaNo project. Is the concept similar? I don’t know, do I? Do I hope not? Actually I hope just one poor person in the world has had the same crazy thought as me on this. Makes me feel less alone.

WHAT'S GOING ON IN RL/FANDOM
It feels like every weekend at the moment is hard. Actually, it feels like just… every day currently is a struggle to some degree. I’m anxious and tired and God damn exhausted. I just want the meeting on the 17th to be over and I want to have my disability pension and just… be able to finally settle into some kind of peace. I want to be able to write without feeling guilty, like I should constantly be doing something else. Something else than being good to myself and be mild and gentle with me. I am going to rewatch both the Hamburg Ballet and Paris Opera Ballet versions of The Lady of the Camellias before Tuesday and NaNo start. Maybe peak at Bolshoi Ballet’s version, since someone seems to have reuploaded it to YouTube. The Paris Opera one I’ll be simultaneous-watching with an online friend tomorrow, so that’s going to be nice. The Hamburg Ballet version, tonight. Bolshoi Ballet, meh, whenever.
